WHAT HAPPENED AT WALL STREET IN FRIDAY’S TRADE:
# As for the main US indexes, the Dow finished Friday’s session down 0.4% at 38,627, the S&P 500 was 0.5% lower at 5,005, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.8% lower at 15,775.
# The negative catalyst: The hotter-than-expected January Producer Price Index (PPI), reading on inflation sent stocks sharply lower early Friday. An encouraging update on consumer sentiment helped indexes swing higher mid-morning, but the positive price action was short-lived.
# The January Producer Price Index (PPI), which measures what businesses are paying suppliers for goods, was up 0.3% month-over-month, higher than the 0.1% increase economists were expecting. On a year-over-year basis, headline PPI rose 0.9%.
# The street will look for cues from the FOMC minutes of the January policy meeting, scheduled on February 22.
# The FOMC minutes is likely to offer insights into the potential timing of future interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. Mostly, the focus will be on when the Fed is expected to cut interest rates during the year.
# Meanwhile, the street will spy with one big eye the reopening of China’s financial and commodity markets after the week-long Lunar New Year festivities.
# WTI crude oil are seen trading firm at $78.90 per barrel.
